You Can Protect Whales from Captivity

The Canadian government is making slow progress with legislation that would protect marine mammals, but without your support, it may be lost. Bill S-203, the Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphin Act, passed out of the Senate and will now move into the House of Commons.

If passed in the House, this Bill would ban the import, export, public display, live capture and captive breeding of whales, dolphins and porpoises in Canada.

The Bill must pass all three readings and receive royal assent to become law—all before the government breaks for the summer in 2019. After that, all unfinished business in the Commons, including Bill S-203, dies. That may seem like a long time, but only a few short months remain to stop the suffering of these majestic creatures.

Keeping whales and dolphins in captivity is one of the cruelest things that people can inflict on these intelligent, ocean-ranging, social animals. Apart from rescue and rehabilitation, there is no ethically defensible reason for capturing and imprisoning them in aquariums and marine parks. Don’t let the few people profiting on animals suffering go on any longer.

You can make a difference for these beautiful creatures. Whales and dolphins belong in the ocean and not in a tank. All of us that care need to contact our MPs now and ask them to vigorously support this important Bill in the House of Commons.

The Return of Jingle

HI FRIENDS! It's me, Jingle! I'm so excited that Santa sent me back to the Ottawa Humane Society this year! Last year I got into a lot of mischief, but had so much fun showing you around the shelter and introducing you to all sorts of animals.

I was sunning myself on a beach at the end of November when I got the call from Santa. "Jingle," he said in a serious tone. "I need to send you to the Ottawa Humane Society a few days early so you can watch over a puppy with a broken leg who needs some extra TLC."

"On my way, Santa!" I packed away my swim trunks and sunscreen, and hopped on the next reindeer ride to Ottawa.

I'd like you to meet Balboa, a four-month-old yellow Labrador retriever who has a broken leg. This adorable puppy is getting the help he needs to have his second chance. He is one of 471 animals in the care of the OHS right now — click here to read more about Balboa and find out how you can help animals like him this winter.

How cold is too cold for your pet?

Don’t be fooled by the myth that all animals in our community can naturally withstand cold temperatures. Like people, pets are susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite. There is simply no hard and fast rule about how long your pet can withstand the cold. In general, pets who are small, have short legs placing their bodies close to the ground, are very young or very old, are in poor health, or have thin fur coats are more susceptible to cold temperatures. Freezing rain or rapid decreases in temperature increase the risks to our pets.

Stay alert when your pet is outside. Recognize behaviours such as whining, shivering, acting anxious, appearing slow or weak, or looking for places to burrow and lie down as possible signs of hypothermia.

Importantly, know that frostbite is more difficult to detect and may not appear until days later, when the damage is already done.

If you see signs of hyperthermia or frostbite in your pet, contact your veterinarian immediately.
