Ottawa Humane Society Assists
in Rescue from Quebec Kennel

One of the many dogs rescuedTwo Ottawa Humane Society Rescue and Investigation officers and an experienced volunteer assisted in the rescue of hundreds of dogs from a large-scale breeder on September 16.  The team deployed to Paws “R” Us kennel in Shawville and worked continuously for over two days along with American-based Humane Society International and other specialized partners to rescue the dogs.

ANIMA-Quebec inspected the facility, observed numerous animal welfare infractions and issued a warrant. The animals were assessed and transported to an emergency shelter.

OHS RIS officers are restricted from commenting on specifics or details about the Paws “R” Us case because the investigation is ongoing.   OHS Rescue and Investigation Services manager, Miriam Smith, says, “In similar situations, we see dogs that have been confined in wire crates, many of whom have never been outdoors and would not know how to walk on solid ground.”

“Frequently, they’re suffering from untreated, often painful medical conditions and display obsessive compulsive behaviour." The Ottawa Humane Society has offered to take in and care for as many of the rescued dogs as its facility can accommodate.

Shop to Benefit the Animals

Savvy shoppersNothin’ says lovin’ like a stag horn, at least for your four-legged friends!  A stag horn is a chewy dog treat made from naturally-shed deer antler that lasts and lasts!  It’s just one of many all-natural, pet items at the Ottawa Humane Society’s new retail store inside the newly constructed facility at 245 West Hunt Club Road.  Proceeds from all sales help support the OHS animals.  The store provides convenience items you’ll need when you adopt an animal at the OHS, as well as items that you aren’t likely to find at other stores. The store is staffed by a part-time retail coordinator and four volunteers who help out between 10 and 12 hours per week. And, of course, the animals at the OHS benefit from each purchase!

Before you vote
October 6,
tell your provincial election candidate to support OHS animal rescue work

The OHS is legally mandated to enforce the animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada, yet it receives no funding for investigations services work.  Investigating cases of animal cruelty and neglect, takes time, resources and money.  Before you vote in the provincial election Oct. 6, tell the candidates in your riding that you want them to fund this important work and protect Ottawa’s animals. Don’t delay.

Armin's story

Armin

Armin, a stray eight-month-old orange tabby kitten, was rescued in May. Armin had a severe broken leg that needed to be amputated. He underwent two surgeries at the OHS in one day: neutering and the amputation. Armin is now recuperating in foster care.

Help Armin and other animals in need by making a donation.
