Reward Offered in Case of Dead Cat Found in Dumpster

The Ottawa Humane Society is offering a $4000 reward for information leading to charges in the case of a dead cat found in a dumpster behind an apartment complex at 1411 Morisset Avenue.  The cat, a female, spayed Calico (orange, black and white) approximately five-years-old, was found with its back legs tied together with an electrical cord.  It was determined that the cat died from severe trauma, including extensive internal bleeding, and a lacerated spleen and kidney.

This is the second time the OHS has offered a reward for information in an animal cruelty case. “This case is a horrific case of abuse, warranting this type of response,” said Bruce Roney OHS Executive Director.  “Outraged donors came forward with the funds.  We all want to prevent cases like this from happening and to see justice served when do.  We hope that this reward money will lead to charges and a conviction.”

If you know the individual who might be the cat’s owner, or if you observed anyone using the dumpster between January 17 and 20, please contact the Ottawa Humane Society at 613-725-3166 ext. 224.

Although legally mandated to enforce the animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada and the Ontario SPCA Act, the OHS does not receive any government funding or funding from any animal welfare group and relies on donations to perform this essential work.
Please make a donation to help fund this important community work.

February is Prevent a Litter Month

Prevent a LitterThis is national prevent a litter month.  Every year thousands of animals are born into poor conditions, not cared for properly or are homeless. You can help! Be a responsible pet owner and spay and neuter your pets. Contact your veterinarian. The OHS is doing its part by ensuring that cats and dogs adopted from the shelter are spayed and neutered.

Benefits of Spaying/Neutering:

  • Reduces tendency in male cats and dogs to roam
  • Eliminates inconvenience of the heat cycle in female dogs and cats
  • Provides better health in male and female dogs and cats
  • Eliminates spraying in most male cats
  • Facilitates training
  • Qualifies your pet for a reduced municipal license fee in Ottawa
Cold Weather Crackdown

If it's too cold for you...Plunging temperatures can be dangerous and even life-threatening for pets.  Remember to bring your dog inside in extreme temperatures.  Owners of outside dogs need to be especially vigilant about providing appropriate care in the cold winter months.  The OHS will have zero tolerance for animals left outside without adequate shelter and an ample supply of fresh water in the cold months.  If OHS Rescue and Investigation Services agents find a dog left outside without adequate shelter or water, in intolerable conditions with no owner around, the dog will be removed for its own safety and animal cruelty charges will be laid.  More information on how to protect your pet this winter is available on the OHS website.

Buddy & Belle

Carleton

Little Carleton (A132816), a two-month old Boston Terrier mix dog, arrived at the OHS with many medical problems. This little puppy could barely breathe through his nose, had a problem called “cherry-eye” in both of his eyes, and a hernia on his belly button!

After determining that Carleton was otherwise healthy, the OHS veterinarian performed four surgeries on him in one day! He had his nose repaired, eye and hernia surgeries and was neutered. He healed quickly and returned to the OHS to find a forever home.

You can be a partner in helping Carleton, and animals like him, by making a donation towards his treatment.
