Animal care workers to train city by-law officers

Bylaw ServicesOHS staff will be training Ottawa by-law officers on safe animal handling techniques on May 5 at the shelter. The one-day workshop will focus on reading behaviour of both cats and dogs, tips and tricks for catching stray animals, dog pole usage, how to safely get animals in and out of cages, and how to securely attach leashes.

This is the first time the OHS has teamed with animal control officers for this kind of learning opportunity, and our hope is that it will lower the risk of bites and scratches and provide new officers with the information needed to properly deliver animals to us at the Municipal Animal Shelter. If the training is successful, future sessions will be planned.

  OHS mourns Kurt Waldele

Kurt and SuzanneThe OHS lost an incredible friend and supporter last month with the death of Chef Kurt Waldele. Kurt was a key figure in Ottawa’s culinary community, as well as being an avid animal lover. He passed away after a battle with cancer on April 18, 2009.

For almost 10 years, Kurt, along with his wife, Suzanne Beauchemin, hosted a renowned garden party for the OHS at their Cumberland home. He was also actively involved in the OHS FurBall, cajoling friends, suppliers and fellow chefs to support the event with donations and sponsorship, and planning menus for two of the five galas. Thanks to Kurt’s involvement, both events raised more than $736,000 for the animals of Ottawa.

Thank you, Kurt, for all you did for Ottawa’s animals.

Buddy & Belle fund helps animals in need

Abbey Cassie

With the launch of the new OHS website in March, the OHS unveiled a new fund dedicated to helping particular animals in need. The Buddy & Belle fund — named for the cat and dog pictured in our logo — solicits gifts to pay for life-saving medical treatment and medical treatment for shelter animals. The fund will highlight animals like Cassie, a cat that came to us with severely frostbitten paws, and Abbey, a husky who was surrendered by her owners after they couldn’t afford to fix her broken leg.

Top 10 reasons for animal surrender

SurrenderGiving up an animal is never an easy decision, and the reasons for doing so are varied. At the OHS we recognize that sometimes giving up a pet is the best option — for you and for your animal — and we take all animals that come to us, regardless of circumstance.

Here are the top 10 reasons owners surrender their pets to the OHS:

    1. Too many pets in the home
    2. Inhibiting ability to travel
    3. Moving
    4. Allergies
    5. Owner problems
    6. No time
    7. Housesoiling
    8. Too much responsibility
    9. Cost
   10. New baby
