Marineland: Heck No, I Won't Go

orcaAbout a decade ago, I was fortunate enough to participate in a whale watch in Massachusetts. Of course, whale watches in those waters are tightly regulated. Boats can only come so close, motors need to be turned off, etc. I was satisfied that my thrilling experience wasn't at the expense of the welfare of these majestic creatures; not so for marine mammals in captivity. Boycott Ottawa Bull Riding Event
rodeoOn Aug. 20, a national bull riding event, called the PBR Monster Energy Canada Tour, makes a stop at TD Place.

“The rules are simple. Place a wiry 140-pound cowboy on the back of a hulking, snorting temperamental 2,000 pound bull and see if he can ride the beast for an eternal eight seconds,” the show’s website reads.

But what sounds like an exciting event is actually quite cruel to the unfortunate animals involved.

There are many reasons the OHS is asking our community to boycott this event. According to the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, “Contrary to popular belief, bulls do not usually buck as displayed in rodeos. Flank straps are tightened around the groin to cause the bucking, and result in severe sores. Spurs dig into the bull’s flesh and electric prods are used to encourage aggressive behaviour.”

Please boycott the show and show organizers that events that include animal cruelty are not welcome in our community.
