OHS Gives Cats From Local Group Their Second Chance
|
In February, the OHS was called to help a small group in Eastern Ontario that had ran out of space for all of the cats in its care. In total, 26 cats were transferred to the OHS, including Juniper, a four-year-old feline who was living in a bathroom with her day-old kittens and two other female cats when she was rescued.
Once she was in the care of the OHS, staff got to work to give Juniper and her kittens their second chance.
A vet exam revealed Juniper needed dental surgery. Her kittens had sparse coats and were tested for ringworm, which was negative.
Juniper, who is now in the care of a dedicated foster volunteer till her kittens are old enough to be weaned, was also very fearful when she arrived at the shelter. She spent her first days in her foster home hiding in a carrier with her kittens. But with lots of love and patience, her foster volunteer reports that Juniper and her kittens now purr happily as they explore the house. Juniper loves spending time with her human caregivers and she’ll give them gentle head-butts when she wants to be pet.
Thanks to you, the OHS can help more animals like Juniper get their second chance.

April 23-29 is National Volunteer Week
|
Did you know that the OHS is supported by more than 715 volunteers?
Volunteers are an essential part of who we are as an organization, helping us save lives and assisting with so many wonderful services to our community.
Volunteers donate their time and skills to more than 30 volunteer-based programs and assist with activities, including photocopying, data entry, planning and executing special events, canine and feline enrichment, support for our mobile spay/neuter services, post-surgical recovery, providing care for our animals residing at pet stores, public education in both French and English, and so much more. Many of our volunteers donate their time to multiple volunteer programs — helping us accomplish even more throughout the year!
This year, National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 23 to April 29. Please join us in thanking our dedicated volunteer team for their support throughout the year.

Emergency Surgery Saves Elsa and Her Kittens
|
Elsa’s condition was dire when she arrived at the OHS in early March. The two-year-old cat had gone into the labour the day before and gave birth to three kittens. Unfortunately a fourth kitten was stuck in her birth canal.
Elsa strained to push the kitten out for 24 hours and as a result she had a prolapsed uterus. An OHS veterinarian preformed emergency surgery to repair her uterus and spay her. Sadly, the fourth kitten did not survive.
Elsa was anemic from the blood loss she suffered during labour, so she was treated with B12 injections. She was also given antibiotics for a urinary tract infection. Although she was in terrible pain when she arrived at the OHS, she dutifully cared for her three kittens throughout her ordeal.
Elsa is now in the care of a dedicated OHS foster volunteer until she’s healthy and her kittens are old enough to be weaned and adopted.
Without the emergency care she received, Elsa may not have survived. Her young kittens likely would not have been able to make it without their mother. Because of you, the OHS was able to be there for Elsa and her kittens when they had nowhere else to turn. Help the next cat like Elsa.
