Changing the Lives of Ottawa's Animals on World Spay Day

spay day

On Feb. 28, the Ottawa Humane Society celebrated World Spay Day by spaying or neutering 47 homeless cats and dogs in the OHS clinic.

Kicking off the day before 9 a.m., four veterinarians, four technicians, five veterinary assistants and two staff volunteers spent nearly five hours helping our community’s homeless canines and felines, strengthening the bonds with our partners to make a difference. Staff and volunteers spayed or neutered nine dogs and 38 cats total, including those in the care of the OHS and others being cared for by partner organizations, recognizing that only when we all work together can we truly change the future for Ottawa’s animals.

OHS Officer Rescues Kitten Trapped in a Car Engine in OHS Parking Lot

ben

OHS Rescue and Investigation Services (RIS) officers travel all around the city to rescue sick and injured animals, but earlier this year they didn’t have to go any further than the OHS parking lot.

It started on a chilly -10 C morning. A Good Samaritan was dropping off a stray kitten when it got loose from his grasp in the OHS parking lot.

OHS staff diligently searched for the cat, but were unable to find him. A few weeks later a staff member heard meowing coming from a car in the OHS parking lot and alerted an RIS officer. When the officer opened the hood the skittish kitten bolted and crawled into the engine of another car. The agent was then able to carefully free the kitten from the engine of the second car.

The kitten was in rough shape. He was thin, dehydrated and very scared. But after a month in foster care, the cat, named Ben by staff, was neutered and sent to one of our Pet Adoption Location (PAL) partners where he found a new home within hours.

If you find an animal in distress, please call the OHS emergency line at 613-725-1532.

After Arriving at the OHS Near Death, Mia is Now in Her Forever Home

miaMia in critical care at the OHS

Mia’s condition was dire when she arrived at the shelter by OHS ambulance in December. The three-month-old puppy was critically ill. She had juvenile cellulitis, a rare condition also known as puppy strangles. She spent 14 days receiving intensive treatment in the critical care unit at the OHS and a month recovering in foster care.

Mia made it through and found her forever home in early February.

Her new family reports that Mia, now named Ryder, is doing great. “She’s growing and putting on weight and she loves her sisters Aspen and Kaya,” said her adopter Grace Fulton.

The OHS was able to give Ryder her second chance because of you. Help the next next animal in need.

National Cupcake Day

We want to send out a huge thank you to those that bought, sold or baked cupcakes for this year’s National Cupcake Day! Together YOU helped make Feb. 27 the sweetest day of the year for our animals.

So far, participants have raised more than $20,000! These donations will help us give a second chance to the 10,000 lost, abandoned, sick and injured animals we see every year. On behalf of the animals and the OHS, thank you.
