November 6th - 13th This was the first year that the HSOC participated in National Shelter Appreciation Week. The idea behind National Shelter Appreciation Week is to salute the many contributions of the volunteers and staff work hard to serve and protect both animals and people, making our community a better place for all residents.
![]() Activities this year included displays at SuperPet, PetsMart Merivale and Innes Road. The displays highlighted various aspects of our services and programs. Thanks to the Humane Education Department and Volunteer Department, staff and volunteers for taking the time to meet with the public and give them a glimpse into the important work we do. Thank you to Tara Davis (HSOC Temperament Evaluator), who along with Don Murray and his canine partner Gunner and Mark Ingalls and his partner Mickey wowed the clients at PetsMart Merivale with demonstrations on what customs dogs do. We are especially proud of Mickey a HSOC adoption graduate who has gone onto to a rewarding career in law enforcement. On November 13th the HSOC held a Flea Market at the shelter. Thank you to everyone who donated crafts and items for sale. Special mention goes to PetsMart Merivale, PetsMart Innes, SuperPet, PetPatch and Little Farm Pet Centre for donating pet supplies and toys for the sale at our "Flea Market".
Submitted by Sue Wilson, Manager of Fundraising The August 29th Garden party hosted by board member Dr. Suzanne Beauchemin and her husband Kurt Waldele, who incidently is the executive chef at the NAC raised in excess of $20,000 at their beautiful home/garden for the Humane Society. This was my first garden party, what an event! Everything was exquisite! From the personal greeting all arriving guests received from Dr. Beauchemin, to the carefully planned out menu/smorgasbord underneath the huge tents. Also, rubbing shoulders with some of Ottawa's elite is crowd pleaser all on its own. Party goers got to hang out with Maggie Kemper (the former Mrs. Trudeau), the Cowpland gang, Sandy Sharkey from local radio station KOOL FM with hubby Rob Bennett, Richard Robinson and his wife Louise, and Ottawa Columinist Sandi DeGras. If you have one or two events you like to attend each year make sure to mark this one on the calendar. The food, ambiance, entertainment is out of this world...and your helping your local charity. Take my word for it don't miss this event next year! A heartfelt thank you to Kurt, Suzanne and the wonderful committee who helped organize this event each year your support is greatly appreciated.
Submitted by Catherine VanderLinde Another year has begun for the Junior Club kids! After the summer hiatus, we met again on September 9th. The Junior Club is held for kids aged 10-12 who are interested in participating in shelter activities. We meet the first Thursday of every month from 6:00 to 7:30. At the beginning of each meeting, the kids team up with the volunteer dog walkers to take the dogs out for a walk. They then convene upstairs to take part in the 'activity of the month' which is followed with pizza and milk. At our September 9th meeting, once the dog walking was completed, the kids worked on coloring the next possible HS0C T-shirt logo. We now have some wonderful entries to choose from! Painting was on everyone's mind at our October 7th meeting. The kids painted a mural on the wall at the entrance to the pound which we certainly encourage everyone to come and admire.
February is Spay/Neuter Month! Have your animal sterilized in the month of February and you are eligible to enter a draw for a great prize package. Call the HSOC in January for more details. |

Submitted by Sue Wilson, Manager of Fundraising Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 6th for the 2nd annual For Pets' Sake 2000! Last year's event was a highly publicized event for the Humane Society. With the involvement of Marlen Cowpland and some ‘hot' bachelors (the firefighters were very popular), the planning for year 2000 is currently underway. Due to the overwhelming response from our lady guests last year, we are concentrating on more "uniform" bachelors this year to grace the runway. We are still planning on having a silent auction with some new additions/changes. For instance, we are approaching local architects to design funky dog houses and cat posts for the silent auction. Also, the venue may be changed next year to accommodate more, more, more, ladies, corporate sponsors and their guests. Details to follow in the next edition of this newsletter. I would like to welcome some new members on our committee this year, who are keen and have some great ideas, in particular, Louise Crandall will be co-chairing the event with me this year. Louise is a supporter of the Humane Society, as well as a past HSOC board a number of years ago. She is also an active Humane Society foster parent. Louise is employed by Ottawa Tourism and in her free time (?) helps organize many fundraisers throughout the city. Her latest, greatest one being Jean Pigott's birthday bash at the Congress Centre that raised a ton of money and was very well publicized. Remember ladies, we sold out last year...get your tickets early! For further information on this event or would like to be a corporate supporter, please contact Sue, that's me in the Fundraising Department, ext. 237.
