Animal Control in Ottawa
Animals have become an important part of our urban life. Many people share their homes with birds, cats, dogs, hamsters etc. For the most part the onus is on the individual to provide adequate care and companionship to the pet(s) they have. The OHS makes it a priority to inform the public the importance of responsible ownership. Part of being a responsible pet owner is to abide by the laws in your community with respect to pets. These laws are often called animal control by-laws. They vary depending on the community you live in. Call your city hall for more information on municipal by-laws for animal control. These by-laws are in place to ensure that your pet(s) live in harmony with your neighbours and your community.
Dogs and cats in Ottawa must be registered (licensed) by the City. Dogs may not roam at large and cats map be picked up. Owners may be charged if their cats become a nuisance.
To keep your pets safe (dogs and cats) always ensure that they are under control at all times and restricted to your own property. Identification tags will bring your pets back home if they should stray.
