FurBall 2011 |
 |
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped behind the scenes and on the floor at the FurBall on March 26! From set up volunteers to greeters to auction monitors and runners, the event could not have been such a success without your hard work. The event raised over $170,000 for the animals at the OHS.
Always a highlight of the event, the IAMS Brightening Lives Animal Parade featured eight dogs and one cat that walked down the red carpet as featured stars! We'd like to thank the animals and their owners for taking time to walk the runway and support the OHS. |
Bunny Snaps |
Another successful Bunny Snaps fundraising event took place over two weekends in April at Lincoln Fields and Westgate Shopping Centres.
A big thank you goes out to our volunteer bunnies, photographers and assistants for making the event successful. We look forward to holding Bunny Snaps 2012 in our new shelter! |

Volunteers of the Month |
Dale Ward and Jan Stark are dedicated animal photographers at the OHS. Dale, a professional photographer, and Jan, his photography assistant, continue to zip through a countless number of cats and dogs during their photography sessions. Dale and Jan take photos of the animals for the website, and can be found at numerous OHS events. They photographed the Brightening Lives animals on the red carpet for the Furball 2011 program and graciously donated the prints to the Brightening Lives volunteers. The OHS is very lucky to have such skilled volunteers committed to taking the best photos possible! |
Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival |
The OHS has been selected as a charity of choice by the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation again this year. The Festival is June 17-19 at Mooney's Bay. We need your help to make the event a success!
Volunteers can sign up for a variety of positions and choose their shifts and volunteer activity online via the Festival's website. Please let the Volunteer Office know which positions you have registered for so we can keep a list and ensure we are meeting our volunteer requirements. |
Shelter Manners Training for Dog Walkers |
Our new and improved Shelter Manners course was a resounding success! Using a combination of theoretical and practical training sessions involving clicker training, dog walkers had the opportunity to learn how to effectively teach basic and advanced obedience to their walking companions. We know this new knowledge will go a long way in making sure the OHS dogs understand their basic commands, which really helps us to place them in homes faster!
We'd like to extend a special thank you to our volunteer course instructors, Delecia and Brianna. Stay tuned for more classes in the future! |
BLAV Volunteer Superheros at Longfields Manor |
The Brightening Lives program has been nominated for an Outstanding Community Organization Award at Longfields Manor, where one of the teams will be recognized at a Volunteer Super Hero Appreciation event! Thank you to the entire Brightening Lives team for a job well done, brightening the lives of the people at this and many other facilities across the city! |
Volunteer Appreciation Events and Photos |
The OHS is grateful for our volunteers every day, and National Volunteer Week is a time for us each year to take the extra step to celebrate all that you do! From April 11-16, we held daily raffles, hosted a Zoonosis training session and other on-site activities for volunteers. In case we don't say it enough, thank you for everything you do! |

Do You Have Smart Serve Certification? |
With more events at the new OHS facility, we will be looking for smart servers for a wide variety of occasions. Smart Serve certification allows people to serve alcoholic beverages where permitted in Ontario. E-mail or call the Volunteer Office, 613 725-3166 ext 231 if you have Smart Serve certification. If you're interested in taking the service training program, you can do so online at www.smartserve.org. |
OHS Move |

We are still looking for foster volunteers to open up their homes to animals starting mid-May and returning after our scheduled move in June. If you are interested, please contact the Foster Customer Service Representative at foster@ottawahumane.ca or call 613 725-3166 ext 255 to put your name on the list!
Volunteers can also help pack and unpack, direct parking, and host beverage and food stations on the days of the move. If you are available for these duties, please contact the Volunteer Office and let us know. |
Drivers needed |
Volunteers are needed to deliver and/or transport animals from other shelters or placement partners to the OHS. Travel is primarily around the Ottawa area but sometimes involves longer distances. Most trips are scheduled in advance, but we sometimes need drivers with on-call availability.
Drivers must have an up-to-date driver's license, a safe driving record, and be able to safely lift carriers with animals in them. If you're interested in this opportunity, please contact us at volunteer@ottawahumane.ca!
Have you changed your information? Please help us keep our volunteer records up to date! If you have changed a telephone number, an e-mail or an address, e-mail or call the Volunteer Manager, 613-725-3166 ext. 231. |
Buddy and Belle |

Petree is a three year old West Highland Terrier/Cairn Terrier mix. She was surrendered by her owner along with four other dogs, in February. During her check up, the OHS vet determined that Petree was not only very underweight, but also pregnant.
Petree moved in with a foster family until her puppies were born. The four lucky pups were born on St. Patrick's Day morning—three girls and a boy, now given Irish names: Molly, Cait Bree and Quinn. Two are black and white. Two are brown and white. Petree's foster family reports that although Quinn, the boy, was briefly stuck during delivery, mother and puppies are all doing very well!
The pups will receive a full veterinary check-up and vaccinations, and then be spayed and neutered.
Help Petree and become a member of the Buddy and Belle fund! |
