Volunteer profile: AGM winners

JanetteAt the OHS Annual General Meeting in June, two outstanding volunteers were recognized for their commitment to the organization.

Janette Hamilton Silcoff received the Eleanor Prowse Volunteer Service Award. She is a team leader for her Brightening Lives group, never misses a visit and always ensures her fellow volunteers and companion animals are prepared for their weekly excursion.  She is also a committed office volunteer and has helped with data entry in the Development Department every week for several years. Janette is keen to do any task and her enthusiasm is greatly appreciated!

JulieThe Siobhan Sheflin Award was given to Julie Peressini for her dedication as an OHS Foster volunteer. For the few animals she helps through fostering, Julie recognizes she is giving many a second chance. She fosters all kinds of cats and special cat cases such as upper respiratory infection, pregnant, nursing, injured and orphaned cats. She has fostered almost 200 animals in her home since beginning as an OHS volunteer!

Thank you Janette and Julie for all of your dedication and hard work!

We're here!

Anne and TrixieThe Volunteer Department celebrated with our furry friends on June 23 as we moved into our new West Hunt Club Road facility. We  are all very happy to see the animals in the environment they deserve.

As with any big move, we are taking time to adjust to the facility and new processes and procedures. We are pleased to see our volunteers interacting with the animals in new and exciting ways.

Dog Walker Anne McCotter says, “The look and feel of the new building is bright and welcoming. The public is enjoying being able to watch the dogs play with the dog walkers in the yard and through the large glass windows into each kennel.”

Clinic Recovery Program volunteer, Anne Smith says “This is the best volunteer job for me and I look forward to coming in every week to work with the wonderful staff. The clinic is bright, cheerful and so easy to work in.”

Drivers Wanted

Drivers are needed on an
as-needed basis. Driving
tasks include dropping off
or picking up animals at other clinics, or from nearby and
out-of-town humane societies.

Some local driving is also
needed for dropoffs and pickups of coin boxes, and materials other departments may need, often for special events.

Daytime flexibility is needed as this position is not scheduled. Requirements include a valid driver’s license, an e-mail address, and the ability to lift carriers with animals.

New look for volunteers

April in an apron
Volunteer Aprons

OHS shelter volunteers will soon be sporting brand new volunteer aprons! Comfy Cat, Clinic and Retail volunteers will be more recognizable to the public as aprons are adorned with the OHS logo. The new aprons will also protect the clothing of our Shelter volunteers.. We look forward to seeing volunteers continue their good work in the new OHS attire!

Buddy and Belle

Tommy on a Karunda Bed

Dogs love to have a bed of their own. Kuranda dog beds raise dogs off the floor onto a hammock-type bed, which is more comfortable to sleep on. Kuranda beds mimic furniture, giving the dogs a feeling of being “home."

Energetic dogs will often use these beds as a trampoline, helping to burn off excess energy. Staff love Kuranda beds too, as they are extremely durable and can withstand tough cleaning products.

You can help a homeless dog rest in comfort. $120 purchases a bed, $140 purchases a bed with a deluxe double-sided fleece pad.

Brightening Lives party!

Brightening LivesOn July 23rd the Brightening Lives volunteers celebrated another successful season with an appreciation event in the new OHS Education Centre.  This gave the volunteers, two-legged and four-legged, the opportunity to meet other volunteers in the program and see the new shelter.

We are currently looking for more dedicated and compassionate volunteers to conduct weekly visits with animal companions to hospitals, retirement homes, long-term care facilities and other social service agencies.  Volunteers must have access to a vehicle, an animal companion that is deemed suitable for the program by the OHS, and commit to 2-3 hours weekly for a minimum of one season (from September to May). Currently, we need volunteers who are available for daytime visits between Monday and Thursday.
If you have a companion animal that you think would be suitable for the program, please contact the Volunteer Manager at volunteer@ottawahumane.ca or call 613 725-3166 for more details.
