2011 Iams Wiggle Waggle Walkathon Raises $185,000
Wiggle Waggle Walkathon

The OHS celebrated the 23rd annual Iams Wiggle Waggle Walkathon last month. Almost 1,000 registered walkers took part and raised over $185,000 for the animals!
We simply could not have done it without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Thank you to our Wiggle Waggle Walkathon Committee who worked tirelessly to make this event a success. Thank you to the 110 volunteers who helped set up, registered participants, and organized the day’s activities. All of us at the Ottawa Humane Society appreciate your support for this event. See you next year!

Volunteer Profile: Retail Volunteer Stephen Tom

Stephen TomThe OHS retail store is an exciting addition to our new Hunt Club facility. The store provides convenience items to clients who are adopting an animal and need some basic supplies, as well as unique items that clients aren’t likely to find at other stores.  Animal adopters, existing pet owners, and Adoption Centre visitors can find essential pet supplies such as food, grooming products and brightly-coloured collars and leashes, safety items such as doggie life jackets, or just-for-fun items, including organic cat nip and bacon-flavoured doggie kibble sauce. And, of course, the animals at the OHS benefit from each purchase!

The store is staffed by a part time Retail Coordinator and four volunteers who help out between 10 and 12 hours per week to ensure there is always someone available to stock items and assist clients. Stephen Tom, a new OHS retail volunteer, enjoys talking to people and helping them buy items for their new pet.

For Stephen, the new retail opportunity is an exciting one, but even more significant is the ease of access the new building allows for him in his wheelchair. “This building is a great improvement over the old facility, where it was impossible for me to help.  Here I can easily move around in the store and anywhere else I need to be inside.”

The OHS is pleased to offer opportunities to volunteers with mobility issues and having Stephen help out in the store is important to us.

Interested in Office
Volunteer Work?

The Development Department needs volunteers with weekday daytime availability to assist with data entry. Volunteers must have computer experience; previous database experience is an asset. If you are interested in office volunteer work, please contact the Volunteer Manager.

Buddy and Belle

Balou
Balou, a black Labrador retriever-mix, was picked up at a local veterinary clinic by the OHS Rescue and Investigation Services team. He had suffered a broken leg and his owner could not afford veterinary care.

When he arrived at the OHS he was examined and given medication to help with this painful injury. After consultation with an orthopedic veterinarian, Balou’s leg was put into a Velpeau sling — a special type of sling to allow his leg to heal comfortably without surgery.

Balou was fostered by a Registered Veterinary Technician (also an OHS employee) so he could have daily physiotherapy on his healing leg. Now, Balou is on the road to recovery! Please help Balou, and other animals like him in need of emergency treatment, by making a donation.

Calling all Groomers!
Goomers wanted!

The OHS needs volunteer groomers for weekly shifts. The building now has a fully equipped grooming room, table, tub, and supplies so animals can be spruced up onsite before heading to the Adoption Centre.  Tell your groomer or anyone you know who has professional grooming experience with cats and dogs, about this volunteer opportunity! If you would like to learn more, please contact the Volunteer Manager, volunteer@ottawahumane.ca, 613 725-3166, ext 231 for more information.

PAW Monthly Giving

The Ottawa Humane Society's PAW Plan (Pre-Authorized Withdrawal) is a convenient and generous way to help the animals. Many OHS volunteers support the organization as PAW donors.  Andrea Rheaume, a Comfy Cat and Foster volunteer, and PAW donor is pleased her donation helps to provide better care for all of the animals at the OHS’s new facility, especially the injured, neglected or abandoned ones. “As a volunteer, I can see firsthand how the animals are a lot less sick and stressed, and are ready for adoption sooner as a result.”

By donating monthly you are helping the animals in our care throughout the year! If you are interested in learning more about the program, contact the PAW Hotline 613-725-3166 ext. 254 or emailing PAW@ottawahumane.ca.
