National Volunteer Week — April 28 to May 1 |
 |
National Volunteer Week is right around the corner and to mark the occasion, we’ll be presenting the following seminars:
Monday April 28 — Emergency Animal Protection Services (EAPS). Inspector Tim Brown will speak on emergency animal rescues, investigations and animal hoarding.
Tuesday April 29 — Behaviour assessments for dogs. Cyndi Frendo, temperament evaluator and owner of K-9 Concepts, will give a presentation on why we temperament test shelter dogs.
Thursday May 1 — Animal care. Marlene Bradley, OHS manager of animal care and re-homing, will speak on foster care, various cat and dog illnesses, and animal first aid.
All sessions run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and include snacks and a shelter tour. Space is limited, so please sign up with Christine by April 22 to reserve your spot.

We are grateful to all the volunteers who so generously gave their time to help at this year’s Easter Pet Pics. Together, we raised over $1,600 for the animals! It was a grand effort, especially since the weekend at Lincoln Fields was marred by a massive snowstorm. Thank you, not just for showing up despite the grim forecast, but for being on time and in good spirits. Special thanks to the “snow team” crew: Tara Anderson, Holly Brant, Bertha Norvor, Lanise Hayes, Carolyn Ewers, Amelia McIntosh and Celine Deschambault. |
FurBall fun with the animals |
 |
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped at the FurBall on March 29. The sold-out event was a tremendous success, raising more than $119,000! The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly a visit from the Brightening Lives dogs, whose waggly tails and wet noses greeted guests midway through dinner.
A very special thank you to Christina Gillies, Elizabeth Aucoin and team who worked so hard for many months to make the 2008 FurBall a night to remember.

The responses from our fall foster survey are back and we’ve already begun implementing some of your suggestions. We’ve introduced an appointment system which should decrease wait times for foster parents, and we’re planning training sessions to help with medical questions and concerns (see Volunteer Week information above). We’ve also developed a new animal information sheet that will provide important details for potential adoptive families. More exciting initiatives are planned for the foster department, so stay tuned! |

Golf tournament

Believe it or not, spring is on its way and that means it’s time to start thinking of the annual OHS Fore the Animals golf tournament. This year’s event will be held June 12, 2008 at Manderley on the Green. For more information on registering your foursome, contact Candice.
Obedience for shelter dogs
Dog walkers who have taken the level one training session are invited to take the next obedience training session, taking place April 9, April 16, and April 23. (Please make sure you are available for all three dates.) Sign up now as we only have five spaces available.
Volunteer of the Month

Tracey is a fabulous premises volunteer who has gone the extra mile in the last few months when we were in need. Her expertise keeps everything sparkling clean, and for that we’re extremely grateful. Thank you so much, Tracey, for your dedication and good humour!
