Poacher’s slaughter in Botswana adding to decline in elephant numbers

Anyone who cares about animals had to have been devastated to read about the killing of 87 elephants in Botswana at the hands of poachers. The images of the corpses of these once majestic creatures were terrible to see. The incident is particularly disturbing, as Botswana has been seen as a sanctuary nation for elephants, and the killings occurred deep in conservation territory.

African elephants are among the most vulnerable species on the planet. They are threatened by habitat loss, climate change and poaching. Their numbers have fallen steadily since 1900, to just 5 percent of their former numbers.  A heartening upswing in the population in the late 1990’s ended in just a few years and the population has been dropping ever since.

National Geographic has reported African elephant populations are currently dropping eight per cent a year.

Elephants are extremely intelligent animals and have memories that span many years. They form deep family bonds and live in tight matriarchal family groups of related females. They display signs of grief, joy, anger and play.

Elephants deserve better than being butchered en masse for their tusks, leaving their bodies to rot on the African savanna.
You can do your part:

  • Never buy anything made of ivory.
  • Never attend a circus or show with captive elephants or any captive wildlife.
  • Write the Federal Minister of the Environment Catherine McKenna to ask that Canada to do more to protect the African elephant.

Thank YOU for joining us at the 2018 Wiggle Waggle Walk & Run presented by Escape Manor

On Sunday, September 9 over 1,300 amazing participants and their four-legged friends gathered together at Lansdowne Park for the 30th annual Wiggle Waggle Walk & Run presented by Escape Manor.

We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day and many incredibly dedicated furry and human supporters who helped raise over $200,000 for the animals in OHS care! A huge shout out to our top fundraisers who include:

  • Wendy Morgan, Heather Nicolson and Sylvie Morel (Top Individual Fundraisers)
  • Aidan McCoy, Rohan Thukral, Vicky Teracol and Jack Duncan  (Top Youth Fundraisers)
  • Mooselake Labs & Friends (Top Fundraising Team)

If you have outstanding donations that need to be submitted, please visit our online event site or contact us and we’d be happy to assist you!
We’d also like to give a special thanks to the many sponsors and volunteers who made this event possible. Without their financial support and countless volunteer hours, we would not have been able to raise the much needed funds for Ottawa’s most vulnerable animals.

Last but certainly not least, it’s people like you who are truly making a difference for the animals. It’s your support and attendance at events like these that ensure the Ottawa Humane Society can continue to support the nearly 10,000 animals who need care every year!
