Why are Dog-Friendly Businesses Important?

They help create a more welcoming and dog-friendly community in Ottawa! Plus everything is better with your best friend by your side.

Spending time in public with your dog helps strengthen your bond and is a wonderful training and enrichment opportunity. It's a great chance to put the skills you've worked on together to the test!

Exposing dogs to new people, places, sounds and smells provides them essential socialization, making them more comfortable and calmer in all kinds of environments.

Dog-Friendly Businesses allow dogs to come on every journey with their favourite people! When dogs can tag along, fewer will be left in a hot car – an extremely dangerous situation.

Practice Petiquette

Bringing your dog to a Dog-Friendly Business? Practice responsible pet ownership to make sure it’s a positive experience for everyone – including your dog. Follow these tips for a positive Dog-Friendly Business outing!

Keep your dog on a leash at all times while in the store or patio. Stay close by and keep an eye on your pup so they don't get into things they shouldn't.

Take your dog for a potty break before entering a Dog-Friendly Business! Always carry poop bags to clean up after your dog in case of an accident.

Bring essential supplies with you like poop bags, treats, water, etc. If you're in for an extended stay on a dog-friendly patio, you might want to bring a blanket or bed to keep your dog comfortable!

Not everyone is interested or prepared to interact with your dog. Give others space unless they ask to pet your dog.

It's easy for public spaces to become overwhelming for a dog. Monitor your dog's comfort levels and if they need a break, take them outside or away from crowds for a minute to reset.

Remember to have fun! Visiting public spaces with your dog is a chance to strengthen your bond and give them mental, physical and social enrichment!

Why Go Dog-Friendly?

Aside from having adorable furry visitors regularly popping into your workplace, the OHS Dog-Friendly Business Program offers many benefits for its members.

Businesses who join the program are added to the OHS Dog-Friendly Business List which is shared with supporters and the community through our website, blog, newsletters and social media channels.

We will also provide you with exclusive marketing and promotional opportunities, as well as special features on our social media channels.

You will also receive a welcome package that includes:

  • A dog water dish;
  • A dog leash;
  • A dog treat jar, filled with treats;
  • In-store signage and promotional materials; and
  • A Dog-Friendly Business window decal.

Once approved, businesses pay a one-time 75$ onboarding fee. There is no cost to renewals! We’ll keep you up-to-date on upcoming events, news and activities happening at the OHS and in the community.

Eligibility Criteria:

In-person businesses and storefronts (retail, dining, apartments, hair salons, etc.) must welcome friendly, well-behaved dogs on their premises or patio area.

Service-based businesses that do not have a physical location for customers must offer the same service pricing to pet owners and non-pet owners alike (no additional pet fees), and demonstrate a measurable, meaningful effort that goes above and beyond for animals. Examples may include:

  • A cleaning service that uses only pet-safe products and materials
  • An IT company that encourages staff to bring their pets to the office
  • A home inspection group with policies to ensure the humane treatment of pets during home viewings and walkthroughs
  • A plumbing company that donates a portion of their proceeds to an animal welfare cause

Please note, we are accepting a limited number of applications from this category.

If you’re not quite there yet - no worries! We’d love to stay in touch and cheer you on as you grow into a dog-friendly superstar.

Please allow 5 business days for processing.
