Pyometra Surgery Program
Pyometra Surgery Program
The Ottawa Humane Society Animal Clinic is offering urgent pyometra surgical services for income-qualified cat and dog owners in Ottawa on a limited basis. Pyometra is a life-threatening infection in the uterus, that requires surgery to treat.
The OHS pyometra surgery program plays a key role in our community by reducing financial barriers that might otherwise separate pets from their loving families.
Appointment availability is subject to OHS capacity. Please read the following information carefully to understand what to expect at an appointment, eligibility and requirements.
Eligibility
In order to qualify, pet owners must live within the City of Ottawa boundaries and meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Enrolment in the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP);
- Enrolment in Ontario Works (OW);
- Enrolment in the Resettlement Assistance Program;
- Receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (for seniors);
- Annual income below $35,000 (notice of assessment required); or,
- Letter or referral from a social worker, social service agency or qualified City of Ottawa employee stating a need for the program.
Requirements
Your cat or dog must have seen a veterinarian and was diagnosed with pyometra.
Your cat or dog must be deemed to be in stable condition at your appointment with the OHS veterinarian to qualify for the program.
You must provide your pet's medical records from your veterinarian.

What to Expect at the Appointment
At your appointment you will meet with the OHS veterinarian for a consultation about your pet’s medical condition. The consultation will explain the next steps for your pet's care, and you will have opportunity to discuss any questions you may have with the veterinarian.
The surgery is not guaranteed, and the ability to safely provide the surgery will be based on findings at the time of your pet’s consultation with the veterinarian. Your pet will go home the same day as the surgery, unless there are complications.
If your pet's condition declines before your appointment, you will need to seek veterinary care urgently at an alternate facility.
