Disaster Doesn’t Always Knock
Not every crisis arrives with a bang.
Some are quiet — a sudden layoff, a surprise rent increase, or an unexpected veterinary emergency. We’ve seen crises take many shapes and force caring people to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their beloved pet.
We work hard every day to keep families together through programs like our Emergency Pet Food Bank and the Sheltering Animals From Emergencies (SAFE) program, but financial strain remains one of the top reasons people surrender their animals.
Pet insurance is one way to protect ourselves, and our pets, against the unknown. This insurance provides support, helping families stay together when unexpected medical expenses arise. At the OHS, we are proud to partner with Petsecure to provide new OHS cat and dog adopters a complementary six-week trial of pet health insurance to help as their pet settles in.
Our friends at Petsecure have gone even further for Ottawa’s homeless animals. They are supporting the pets’ Special Needs Fund, that helps provide for some of the pets who come to the OHS needing significant veterinary care.
Winston is a four-year-old miniature poodle who had a luxating patella, a condition where the kneecap pops out of its groove. Thanks to Petsecure, Winston could receive the surgeries he needed to live his best life.
We rely on the support of our caring community to make second chances possible for the thousands of animals who need us every year. The Special Needs Fund means we can do even more for animals with complex medical needs.
Pets enrich our lives with love, companionship and joy. While we hope never to face serious illness or injury, no amount of planning can account for every emergency. Pet health insurance is a safeguard that empowers families to access the best care for their pets without financial stress, especially when unexpected accidents happen.
If you’re facing challenges in keeping your pet, the OHS is here to help.
