Every Day Heroes
I have read recently that it’s partly in the genes: some people have a stronger response of compassion when they see an animal that is suffering. And if that’s the case, then the Ottawa Humane Society is full of people with those genes, and I am so grateful for it.
It’s National Shelter Appreciation Week — a time to recognize the compassionate, dedicated individuals who care for animals in need every single day. It’s also a time to recognize that care comes at a cost.
At the OHS, we’re celebrating the people who make our mission possible. From our animal care team providing for homeless animals every day, to the adoption team helping animals find their forever homes, to those supporting pets and community members in crisis, to those who make sure we can be here for the animals who need us most.
Shelter work isn’t easy. The days can be long, emotional and demanding. The animals who arrive in our care often come with complex needs and sometimes in a condition that brings us to tears. Our team faces each challenge with compassion in their hearts and a commitment to making life better for Ottawa’s animals.
Our caring team makes the everyday miracles possible. When a box of kittens is discovered in a park, they find a home at the OHS. When a dog desperately needs care to mend their broken leg, our team is there. When a someone is running out of options to provide for their beloved pet and needs a little compassion to keep their pet in their home, our team helps that family stay together.
But it’s not just about the people holding and caring for the animals every day. Others are keeping the shelter clean for our vulnerable charges, or desperately raising funds to make sure we can buy the costly medicine they need. It truly takes a village, and our staff are just that. Together, we provide a safety net for Ottawa’s animals and the people who love them.
People are the heart of the OHS. People who show up for the animals and for each other.
To our entire team: thank you for making Ottawa a more humane and compassionate community for all animals.
Happy National Shelter Appreciation Week.
