Humane Society Calls to Ban Stadium Bull Riding
June 26, 2025 — The Ottawa Humane Society has submitted a petition urging Ottawa City Council to enact a ban on stadium bull riding events within the city. More than 1,300 Ottawa residents signed the petition, calling on the city to implement the ban.
The OHS says bull riding events are exploitative and stressful for the animals involved. The rider on the bull’s back and a flank strap fitted to the bull’s lower belly cause the bull to buck. A stadium environment with loud noises and flashing lights adds additional stress for the bulls.
“At the OHS, we believe animals should be free from fear and distress,” said Sharon Miko, OHS President & CEO. “The conditions bulls are subjected to during these events go against those freedoms.”
If Ottawa enacts a ban on bull riding events, it would be the one of the first cities in Ontario to do so and would join other municipalities on the west coast that have banned the sport.
“Ottawa is a community that cares about animals, bull riding doesn’t have a place in our city,” Miko continued. “As Canada’s capital, we can set an example that animal welfare is a priority in our community and in our country.”
