Ottawa Humane Society Honours Community's Contributions at its Annual General Meeting

September 23, 2019 — The Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) honoured several volunteers and members of the public last week at its annual general meeting, celebrating the many dedicated and passionate individuals and organizations working together to make our community better for the animals.

Dr. Katharine Jones received the Muriel Davies Kindness Award for her outstanding contributions to animal welfare. Since founding Ottawa Stray Cat Rescue (OSCatR) in 2011, Dr. Jones has also purchased two animal hospitals – Ottawa-Nepean Animal Hospital and Chapman Mills Animal Hospital.

Joan Dawson received the Eleanor Prowse Volunteer Service Award for generously giving her time as a feline-focused volunteer at the OHS. She supports the OHS as a feline enrichment volunteer, a clinic recovery volunteer, and through the seasonal in-house OHS orphan kitten program.

Ottawa and Valley Lost Pet Network received the Special Recognition Award for contributing above and beyond to the animals in the care of OHS. They support animals through their online network for reuniting lost pets and owners, and have helped countless pets find their owners using the power of social media.

Linda Lucker and Scott Ferguson, dedicated foster volunteers, were awarded the Siobhan Shefflin Memorial Award, acknowledging their devoted work providing help to many of the neediest animals that come into the care of the OHS. Linda and Scott enjoy fostering animals most in need, recently providing a temporary home for a cat named Cinderella for almost 350 days.

Dr. Kristen Flegel was awarded the Dr. James Hutchison Animal Welfare Award for contributing above and beyond to the animals in need of medical care at the OHS. Dr. Flegel spent the beginning of her career at the OHS and has continued going back to work with the surgical team on volunteer mornings.

Katherine Dines was awarded the Media Award for her for extraordinary effort in raising awareness of the plight of homeless animals. As a local radio personality with MAJIC 100, she is dedicated in her support for the OHS, both professionally and personally.
