Ottawa Humane Society Honours Community's Contributions at Its Annual General Meeting

Sept. 12, 2024  The Ottawa Humane Society honoured several volunteers, members of the public and community organizations this week at its annual general meeting, celebrating their work towards building a more humane and compassionate community for Ottawa’s animals and the people who love them.

Mumma’s Here Now Neonatal Rescue received the Community Spirit Award for their efforts in supporting kittens and puppies requiring neonatal care. The organization helps ensure there is a bright future and second chances for all animals.

Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre received the Special Recognition Award for their work in caring for injured and rescued birds. Wild Bird Care Centre supports between 3,500 to 4,500 birds each year, championing the welfare of birds and working to protect generations to come.

Ken Turcotte received the Eleanor Prowse Volunteer Service Award for outstanding volunteer contributions to Ottawa’s homeless animals. Ken began volunteering with the OHS in 2013 and dedicated 283 hours in the past year. Ken volunteers with the OHS fundraising team, helping to secure life-saving resources for Ottawa’s homeless animals.

Mary Beth Stanistreet received the Siobhan Shefflin Award for her contributions as a foster volunteer that went above and beyond for Ottawa’s animals. Beth fostered 23 animals throughout the year, including a litter of 20 rabbits. Beth’s efforts ensure Ottawa’s animals can rest and recover in the comfort of a temporary home while they wait for their forever home.

Bullies in Need received the Muriel Davies Kindness Award for their work in supporting dogs prohibited in Ontario because of their breed. The organization helps find forever homes or dogs who cannot be rehomed in Ontario.

Dr. Rob Clark received the Dr. James Hutchinson Animal Welfare Award for his contributions as a volunteer veterinarian at the OHS. Dr. Clark helped advance the development of OHS veterinarians, opening up new care options and more second chances for Ottawa’s homeless animals.

Pamela Houlihan received the President’s Special Recognition Award posthumously for her outstanding volunteer contributions to Ottawa’s homeless animals and life-long love of animals. Pamela first volunteered at the OHS in 2005 and resigned from her position in 2019 when her health made it impossible to continue her work. Pamela passed away in 2022 and her incredible spirit and compassion have been missed ever since.

The OHS relies on the support of a caring community to provide life-saving care and second chances to Ottawa’s homeless animals. The OHS team remains endlessly grateful for the support of a community ready to stand up for animals in need.
