Ottawa Humane Society to Host its First Adopt-a-thon, Over 180 Animals Looking for Homes
October 4, 2019 — After a busy summer season at the OHS, the shelter is nearing capacity. For the first time ever, the OHS will be hosting an in-house adopt-a-thon. On Sunday, Oct. 6, families looking for a new pet can pick from over 180 animals currently looking for a new home.
Adoption counsellors will be available throughout the event to support adopters in choosing a pet that best suits their lifestyle and family. “Making the best matches and finding permanent ‘forever homes’ for these animals is very important to us, so we make sure that our adopters are well-informed about the animals’ histories, as well as any behavioural and medical needs, prior to taking them home,” says Zenon Stecewicz, OHS manager: admissions and rehoming.
All cats and dogs available for adoption are sterilized, vaccinated (including rabies – $98 value), health checked and microchipped. Additional adoption benefits include 30 days of free trial pet insurance, a vet voucher for local veterinary clinics and a $25 coupon for Ren’s Pets Depot. “There really is no better way to bring an animal into your home, than to adopt from the OHS – we are fortunate to have such great partners who offer these bonuses for new adoptive families,” said Stecewicz. As an additional incentive on event day, with the adoption of one cat, the OHS will waive the adoption fee for a second cat.
In addition to meeting adoptable animals, visitors can look forward to behind-the-scenes tours, refreshments, retail discounts and a special adopter raffle. For families with young children, there will be a supervised “Kids Zone” where kids can be left with OHS staff to participate in a number of animal-themed crafts, games and, of course, visit with a few OHS volunteer dogs. Parents can then meet available animals, speak in detail with Adoption counsellors and complete paperwork with peace of mind.
“Fall is a busy time of year for most shelters across Ontario. If you’re thinking about opening your heart and your home to a new pet, we hope to see you and your family at this event,” said Bruce Roney, OHS President & CEO.
