Rabbits Approaches Shelter Anniversary - Ottawa Humane Society

Nov. 10, 2025 — A rabbit is approaching his one-year anniversary of care at the Ottawa Humane Society. Klondike, a white American rabbit, was born at the OHS on Nov. 18, 2024. The OHS hopes to find him a forever home before the milestone.

“Rabbits are often the species that takes the longest to be adopted,” explained Craig Dwyer, OHS Manager: Admissions & Rehoming. “Compared to cats and dogs, rabbits represent a much smaller percentage of the animals we help. However, the number of rabbits available for adoption at any time often rivals or dwarfs the number of cats or dogs available.”

The OHS shares that rabbits are sometimes misconstrued as “easy” pets. The OHS emphasizes that like cats and dogs, rabbits need daily attention, exercise and care to live their best lives, and the OHS offers tips for caring for rabbits on its website.

“I think people might be surprised to find out a rabbit is a great fit for their home,” Dwyer continued. “Rabbits can be trained to use a litter box, they can learn tricks, they do very well roaming and exploring a home, and can be cuddly and affectionate.”

All rabbits adopted from the OHS have received a spay/neuter surgery and health check. More information about adoption and Klondike is available on the OHS’s website.
