Still Waiting: A Home for the Holidays

The holidays always feel extra special at an animal shelter.

The halls are decorated. Cards arrive with kind words from our caring supporters. Our volunteers and staff (often in seasonal attire) are here every day to make sure the animals still receive the same loving care.

Among the festivity and cheer, there are a few animals who have been here longer than most. They’ve watched so many others come and go, and they’re still waiting.

This week, I want to share the stories of three of those animals. Their names are Kitty, Diamond and Goliath. And this holiday season, they all have the same wish: a loving forever home.

Kitty arrived at the OHS in May and has been in our care longer than any other cat right now. He came to us with a painful leg injury that needed surgery, and his recovery was long and slow. He’s fully recovered and ready to saunter into the arms of his new family.

Kitty is curious, clever and adorable. He loves puzzle toys and windows with a view. He likes attention on his own terms, but his people are his people.

The next pet is a real gem.

Diamond is a six-year-old bulldog mix who has a sparkle in her eyes and has been soaking up love in a foster home. She’s also been with us since May and is so ready to find her forever home. She loves adventure and is looking for a family to join her on many expeditions to come.

Finally, there’s a pet who takes the spot as our current longest-stay resident.

Goliath was found alone, all by himself last February.  He’s a soft white rabbit with a sweet face, gentle temperament and a mighty heart. Rabbits are often overlooked for adoption. People don’t always know how much love, personality and connection a rabbit can bring to a home.

We call pets like Kitty, Diamond and Goliath “long-stay animals.” It’s a phenomena that happens because we’ll wait as long as it takes to find the right home for a healthy, adoptable pet. While there’s no time limit for a pet to find love, our goal is to get them adopted as soon as possible and secure them the family and love they so desperately deserve.

There are three beautiful animals who could be in a home, curled up by a fireplace and surrounded by the love of their forever family just in time for the holidays.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting, please don’t wait. Visit our website. Come meet Kitty, Diamond or Goliath. Or tell a friend who might be the right match. It takes the support and love of a caring community to find homes for pets in need. Right now, Kitty, Diamond and Goliath need your support more than ever.
