Surrender Surge: Not in Ottawa
Across Canada, some humane societies and animal shelters are reporting a rise in the number of people surrendering their pets. Cost of living is cited as one of the biggest contributors to owners surrendering their pets, and we saw a similar concern in Ottawa a couple of years ago when we asked what barriers might separate a pet from their family.
The problem has not materialized in our community.
Compared to last year, the number of animals surrendered to the OHS has remained steady. I sincerely believe it’s the compassion of our community that has made a difference. When Ottawa first identified cost of caring for a pet as an emerging issue, we worked to get even more connected with our partners to meet the need where it was greatest.
Working together brought pet food banks and wellness clinics directly into the community, ensuring that basic supplies and preventive veterinary care were available for pets and people in need.
Since enhancing emergency boarding for Ottawa’s pets, we have supported 48 pets with temporary foster placements while their families navigate crisis. That’s 48 pets whose person might have otherwise had to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their companion.
Without this amazing level of community action, the OHS could have been among the humane societies that are seeing more pets surrendered.
That’s worth celebrating, but our work isn’t done. While the number of pets surrendered is steady, our goal is to see it decline.
We know the cost of caring for a pet is forcing some families to surrender a cherished companion. Wherever possible, we are working to find more ways to keep loving families together, and we cannot do it without you.
Above said, there is nothing wrong with compassionately surrendering a pet. Sometimes it is not possible for a person to keep their pet, and thoughtfully giving them a second chance is in the best interest of both the pet and the owner. We understand how heartbreaking that can be, and we are here for you. No judgment.
Whether volunteering, adopting or donating, your support makes essential services possible for Ottawa’s animals and the people who love them.
Ottawa is strong for the animals, and it’s thanks to caring people like you.
