The Magic of a Senior Pet
In the fall of 2016, I welcomed a goofy, energetic, three-year-old dog named Dexter from the Ottawa Humane Society into my heart and home. He came bursting into my life like a fluffy whirlwind — playful, enthusiastic and wonderfully silly. From the moment we met, it was clear I’d found my best friend.
Fast forward to today. Dexter is now 12 years old and while he still loves a good game of fetch, he’s no longer the tireless ball-chaser he once was. A few tosses and he’s happily ready to trade his ball for cuddles. He’s gentler, calmer and somehow even more loveable, proving that his golden years are just as full of joy, just in a slower, sweeter way.
There’s something incredibly special about loving a senior pet. Their needs change but so does the bond. The trust deepens. The quiet moments become the best ones. Dexter doesn’t need endless adventures now, he wants comfort, patience and someone to love him through his golden years. It’s an honour to be that person.
Adopting a senior pet comes with so many perks. You already know their personality, they’re often calmer and many are already trained but still eager to learn new tricks. Senior pets offer devoted companionship and welcoming one into your home is a kind, rewarding way to give them the love they deserve in their golden years.
Welcoming Dexter into my home nine years ago was one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made but cherishing him as a senior, learning to slow down with him, to meet him where he is and to celebrate every stage of his life — that’s where the real magic is.
