This Dog Waited 400 Days for Adoption - Ladybug is Finally Home

Oct. 16, 2025 — Last night, after waiting for more than 400 days, Ladybug found her forever home. She was the longest stay dog at the Ottawa Humane Society, and her path to adoption was anything but easy.

“Throughout the past year, Ottawa showed an incredible outpouring of support for Ladybug,” said Sharon Miko, OHS President & CEO. “Since the moment she arrived, pregnant and weighed down with a massive tumour, she felt the love of our caring community.”

Ladybug was found lost and alone in August 2024. She had a complex medical journey at the OHS, carrying out her difficult pregnancy and ultimately needing her leg amputated because of the tumour.

However, medical needs were only the beginning of challenges Ladybug would overcome. With her complex care needs, the OHS had troubles finding her a forever home. Ladybug attended many adoption appointments that were unfortunately not fruitful.

As Ladybug’s story spread throughout the community, Hill’s Pet Nutrition stepped up, offering a year’s supply of specialty food for her adoptive family — helping to ease the cost of care that had been a barrier for some adopters.

“Ladybug was our longest stay dog, and there are still many more animals at the OHS who need a second chance,” added Miko. “The OHS is always here for the animals, and we’ll always need caring people to give pets loving forever homes.”

The OHS relies on donations to make daily care possible for the animals. Donate on the OHS’s website or consider adopting to help more animals in need.
