How OHS Vet Techs Help Ottawa’s Animals
Before most people have finished their first cup of coffee, veterinary technicians at the Ottawa Humane Society are already helping animals who have nowhere else to turn. And no two days look the same.
A newly arrived cat may need bloodwork. A dog might need X-rays after an injury. A rabbit needs to be prepared for an essential spay/neuter surgery. A veterinary technician makes each of these moments possible for the hundreds of animals counting on the OHS every day.
Veterinary technicians work tirelessly to assess new animals arriving at the shelter, prepare animals for procedures, administer medications, collect samples, monitor anesthesia, assist during surgery and help animals recover safely afterward. They also keep a close eye on an animal’s health and well-being throughout their journey at the shelter.
And their work extends beyond supporting an animal’s physical health. Many animals arrive at the OHS frightened, uncomfortable or unsure of a new, strange place. A veterinary technician might spend extra time reassuring a nervous dog before an examination or finding a gentle way to handle a cat who has had a difficult day.
Throughout the day, priorities can change quickly. We’re no strangers to animals arriving in our care en masse without warning or an animal arriving in critical condition and in desperate need of immediate medical care and treatment. Meanwhile, dozens of other animals still need medications, treatments, diagnostic tests and follow-up care.
It takes teamwork, organization and compassion to keep everything moving, and the effort makes life-saving work possible at the OHS. Veterinary technicians touch the lives of every animal that arrives at the OHS seeking shelter, care and a second chance. Their skill helps animals heal. Their compassion helps animals feel safe. And their dedication helps more animals find their forever home.
I’m proud to work alongside these caring, talented people every day. Next month, we have a unique opportunity for kids in Grade 9 to learn more about this impactful job and other careers in animal welfare. Learn more about Take Our Kids to Work Day.
