Pets from Northwestern Communities Impacted by Wildfires Arrive in Ottawa

Aug. 6, 2026 — Yesterday evening, two cats and three dogs from communities impacted by the wildfires in northwestern Ontario arrived at the Ottawa Humane Society. Partnering with Northern Reach Network, the OHS admitted the animals for shelter, care and rehoming in Ottawa and the shelter is on standby to accept more animals.

“Since the outset of the fires, the OHS has been in close contact with our partners throughout the province to determine how we can best support pets and their people during this crisis,” said Sharon Miko, OHS President & CEO. “Helping animals, no matter where they are, always takes the support of a community.”

Humane societies, rescues and animal welfare groups throughout the province have responded to the wildfires. There are currently more than 400 local animals already in the care of the OHS.

“Summer is one of our busiest seasons at the Ottawa Humane Society,” Miko added. “But when disaster strikes, and animals have nowhere else to go, we’re ready to help however we can. With the support of our caring community, we are here for Ottawa’s homeless animals and can help animals in crisis in Ontario.”

To help support the pets in the shelter and the many more arriving each day, the OHS is asking the community to consider adopting a pet, volunteering to foster a pet, or making a donation to provide essential veterinary treatment and care for Ottawa’s homeless animals.
