The Ottawa Humane Society’s Top Tips for a Safe Halloween

Oct. 30, 2026 —With Halloween approaching, the Ottawa Humane Society is reminding pet owners to take precautions to keep their animals safe. Costumes, candy, decorations and increased activity around the home can pose risks to pets.

The OHS recommends five steps to help everyone have a safe and fun Halloween.

Keep candy and other treats out of reach.

Chocolate and candies containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener, can be toxic to pets. Candy wrappers can also present choking hazards or cause intestinal blockages. Store Halloween candy securely and remind children not to share treats with animals. If a pet consumes a potentially toxic substance, owners should contact their veterinarian immediately.

Consider your pet's comfort before dressing them in a costume.

While some pets tolerate costumes, others may experience stress or discomfort. Costumes should not restrict an animal's movement, vision or breathing, cause overheating, or present choking hazards.

A festive collar or bandana may be a more comfortable alternative for some pets. Avoid dressing up animals that show signs of fear or discomfort.

Provide a quiet space for your pet.

Repeated doorbell ringing, unfamiliar visitors and costumes can be stressful for animals. The OHS recommends providing pets with a quiet, secure, comfortable space away from the front door, with access to water, bedding and favourite toys.

Ensure your decorations don’t cause a hazard.

Candles, electrical cords and small decorations can create hazards for curious pets. Battery-operated candles are a safer alternative for lighting pumpkins. Decorations and electrical cords should be secured and kept out of reach of animals.

Take precautions to prevent pets from escaping.

Frequent opening and closing of doors increases the risk of pets escaping. Keep pets away from busy entrances and ensure pets have collar, tags and microchips to help them return home if they get out.

Taking a few precautions can help prevent injuries, reduce stress and ensure pets have a safe and happy Halloween.
