Top Safety Tips for Pets During Halloween
While Halloween can be a night of spooky fun for people, it can bring some unexpected scares for our pets. Strange costumes, unfamiliar visitors and tempting treats can create a frightening, and sometimes dangerous, experience for our furry friends.
Here are five ways to help your pet have a safe and happy Halloween.
Keep the candy, chocolate and other human treats out of reach.
Chocolate and candies can be extremely dangerous for pets. Even a loose candy wrapper can be a choking hazard or cause intestinal blockage.
Keep Halloween treats safely out of reach, remind kids not to share their candy with pets. If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Make sure costumes prioritize comfort over cuteness.
A dog dressed as a pumpkin or a cat wearing little bat wings might be adorable, but how does your pet feel about their Halloween outfit? Some pets are comfortable wearing costumes while others find costumes frightening or uncomfortable.
If you decide to dress up your pet, make sure their costume doesn't restrict their movement, vision or breathing, cause overheating, or create a choking or tripping hazard. Watch for signs of distress and remove the costume if your pet seems uncomfortable.
A festive bandana, Halloween-themed collar or fun photo filter can be just as cute.
Give your pet a safe place to retreat.
A constantly ringing doorbell, excited children and unfamiliar faces can make Halloween overwhelming for pets. Consider creating a quiet, comfortable space away from the front door where your pet can relax. Include their favourite bed, toys and treats.
Prevent decoration disasters.
Flickering candles, electrical cords and dangling decorations can attract curious paws and noses. Choose battery-operated candles for your pumpkins, secure electrical cords and keep decorations with small or easily swallowed pieces out of reach.
Be prepared. Make sure your pet can find their way home fast if they get out.
With the front door opening throughout the evening, there's an increased risk of a pet slipping outside unnoticed.
Keep your pets safely indoors and away from busy entrances. Make sure they are wearing a collar with an updated tag and are microchipped so they can be returned home quickly if they get out.
The best Halloween memories are ones where everyone feels safe and comfortable, including our pets. Whether your dog loves greeting visitors, your cat prefers watching the festivities from a cozy hiding spot or your pet is happiest avoiding the excitement altogether, respecting their needs is one of the best ways to help them enjoy the holiday.
